BLOWN GLASS VASES

The vases are mouth-blown and hot formed. A blowpipe, is dipped into the molten glass, which is fluid, honeylike, and must be kept spinning slowly to preserve the shape while it is formed. It is then worked with hand tools and additional glass, incorporating the colors and effects required by the designs. Hollow forms are blown, shaped, and then transferred to  a solid rod called a pontil or “punty”. The lip of the vessel is heated and manipulated to the desired shape. Colors are created by adding silver and other metal oxides to the glass formula. The hot finished piece is sprayed with a tin and acid "fume" to create a range of iridescent colors. The completed vessel is put into an annealing oven to cool overnight, later the base is ground flat on a diamond wheel and signed.
